Uganda Visa Rejection Reasons and How to Avoid Them

Uganda Visa Rejection Reasons and How to Avoid Them

Looking for a fun trip from the UAE? Uganda can be an excellent choice. Travellers prefer it for thrilling safari experiences, but there are other exciting activities as well. Of course, gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a must-try. Splashing through the Nile rapids in Jinja is equally interesting. Just a reminder, the visa rules for the country has changed. Yes, visa on arrival is no longer available. Anyone travelling to Uganda from the UAE must get an approved e-visa before flying.

And this is where many people face the problem, because the form looks simple but the immigration officers check each document very carefully. If anything is missing or not matching, the Uganda Visa gets rejected and the USD 50 fee (around AED 185) is not refunded also. So let me tell you the most common rejection reasons that we see and what you can do to avoid them.

1. Passport Validity and Blank Pages

This is the most basic one but still majority of the rejections comes from here. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you enter Uganda and it should have minimum one blank page for the visa stamp. Suppose your passport expires after four months, then the system will not approve it no matter how good your other documents are. My suggestion is to check the expiry date first before you even open the application form.

2. Missing Yellow Fever Certificate

Now this one surprises many travellers from Dubai. Uganda asks for yellow fever vaccination certificate for everyone above one year of age and you have to upload it while applying. The vaccine should also be taken at least 10 days before your arrival, otherwise the certificate is not considered valid. The good news is that the vaccine is available in the UAE. And the process is very easy. Get it from a DHA approved clinic in the UAE – the sooner, the better. Once you get the vaccine, just don’t lose the card. Keep the original with your passport at all times. You never know, the officers at Entebbe Airport may want to see it again.

3. Poor Quality Photo and Scanned Documents

When its about the online application, the officer only sees what you upload. A blurry passport scan, a selfie taken in the bedroom or a photo with dark background is a very common reason for rejection. The photo should be recent, passport size with plain white background and your face should be clearly visible. Same goes for the passport bio page, all four corners should be visible and the text should be easy to read.

4. Wrong Visa Type Selected

Uganda has different categories like the ordinary single entry visa, transit visa, multiple entry visa and the East Africa Tourist Visa which costs USD 100 and covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda together. Many people who are planning to visit Kenya also in the same trip apply for single entry visa and then they get stuck at the border. Having said that, the purpose of your travel and the visa type must match, otherwise the application looks suspicious to the officer.

5. No Hotel Booking or Return Ticket

The immigration want to know where you will stay and when you will leave. If you don’t upload a hotel reservation, a safari booking or a return flight itinerary, the officer has no proof that you are a genuine tourist. Suppose you are staying with a friend or relative in Kampala, then you need an invitation letter from that person along with copy of his ID.

6. Details Not Matching Across Documents

This is the silent one that people usually don’t notice. Your name spelling on the form, the passport and the flight ticket should be exactly same. Even small things like wrong date of birth, a missing middle name or a different passport number in the hotel booking can lead to refusal. Take five minutes and match every detail before you click on submit.

7. Applying on Unofficial Websites

There are many websites that look like government portal and charge extra fees. Some of them submit incomplete applications and some don’t submit at all. The official portal is visas.immigration.go.ug and the government fee for normal tourist visa is USD 50 only. If a website asks for much higher amount without any clear service, that is a sign it is a third party agent.

So at the end of the day, most Uganda Visa rejections happen because of small mistakes and not because the traveller is not eligible. If you don’t want any of that visa stress, simply apply two to three weeks before your planned travel date. Approval takes just a few days, but that extra time will keep you safe. Suppose your visa application gets rejected or the embassy asks for other documents, you will have enough time to manage everything and reapply. Or you can just go ahead and talk to an expert visa consultant in Dubai. They handle the paperwork, pick the right visa type for you and you get the approval on time without losing the fee.
